Rugby: Upper Sixth A v Abingdon [A]

After an apocalyptic amount of rain, the Upper Sixth game was played at Abingdon Prep as the Bruern pitches were waterlogged. My sincere thanks to Abingdon Prep for hosting two more games and not ending the season with a damp squib.

And so here we are! The last game of the season against one of our strongest opposition. The boys had been playing some excellent rugby over the last few weeks. However, we were understandably nervous after not having much preparation for the game! After 7 minutes of hard battling where Bruern ceded territory, the fast and strong Abingdon winger broke through and scored. As with Magdalen, this early concession seemed to wake the boys up as Abingdon did not score again until the last seconds of the first half.

It was a privilege to watch the boys work as a team and patiently build up phase after phase before Tom E broke away with a powerful run to draw level. Henry D and Edward R, the unsung warriors of this season, rucking and tackling their hearts out. Rupert N encapsulated the heart of the team with his constant commitment to tackling and supporting his teammates. 3-2 to Bruern at half time.
It was a physical performance which countered Abingdon's creative backs and negated their artistry. Bruern never let go of their lead and controlled the second half with patience and vigour. Leo W had a strong second half leading the way with excellent rucking and tackling. His industry was rewarded with a well-earned try, something he had been yearning for all season. A commanding display from the team saw the boys end the season victors with a 6-4 win!

It's been a wonderful and enjoyable season for me as a coach. I have been blessed to work with such a great squad and my sincere thanks to Mr Moore for all his coaching, the parents for their unwavering support but especially the boys for their commitment and enthusiasm for the WHOLE season! Merry Christmas everyone!
