Football: Upper Sixth A v Sibford (H)

On Tuesday the U6th A team welcomed Sibford School to the first team pitch and enjoyed the best playing conditions so far this term with only a light breeze and mild temperature to contend with; a big change from the freezing conditions of recent weeks!

With captain Xavi L leading from the front Bruern started strongly and used the speed and strength of Theo T and Balthazar B to power through the Sibford defence on several occasions. The Sibford team had a few highly skilled players who repeatedly tested the Bruern defence but Will S and Will W held firm.

With the score still 0-0 heading towards half time Nate W found space in the Sibford box to set up Balthazar B for a composed finish to give Bruern the lead. Sibford’s response was instant and despite some quality goalkeeping from Rafer S they eventually found a way through to equalise just before the break.

Both teams maintained the relentless pace as the second half began but it was Sibford who scored three quick goals to take control of the game. To Bruern’s credit they never once let their heads drop and they fought to find a way back into the match. Lorcan O, Ethan G and Ethan W-B battled away in midfield while Larry W, playing in an unfamiliar defensive midfield role, broke up every Sibford attack before they really got going.

In the closing stages Anthony C and Jake G kept pushing the team forward from fullback with great passing and strong runs to open up the play down the wings and their endeavour was rewarded as Balthazar B grabbed a second shortly after hitting the post from a crashing drive.

The team were disappointed to lose but should be proud of keeping a really strong team honest throughout a game in which, on another day, the result could have easily gone the other way.
