Dyslexia

At Bruern Abbey School, we understand the unique challenges that our boys with dyslexia face. Our specialised approach to education focuses on creating an inclusive and supportive environment where every boy can thrive. We will explore what dyslexia is and means to your son, how it affects them, and how Bruern Abbey School can provide the right support to help your son succeed.

What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a neurological condition that affects a person’s ability to read, write, and spell effectively. It is important to note that dyslexia is not related to intelligence; individuals with dyslexia often have average or above-average intelligence. However, they may struggle with processing language and decoding words.

It is estimated that 1 in 10 people has dyslexia and exists in all cultures and across of range of abilities and backgrounds. Dyslexia often runs in the family and whilst there is “no cure” there are lots of practical things that can overcome the barriers it presents. Dyslexia is a learning “difference”, which means that the brain can approach things in a different way to other people. Dyslexia can affect the way people communicate, and is different for everyone. it is not just about reading and writing and it has nothing to do with intelligence. Specific learning differences are often linked with other areas such as dyscalculia and dyspraxia.

Recognising the Signs

Understanding the signs of dyslexia is crucial for early intervention. Some common signs include difficulty with reading fluently, spelling errors, letter reversals, and slow handwriting. At Bruern Abbey School, our experienced staff is trained to identify these signs and provide tailored support.

Children with dyslexia often face challenges in reading and can also impact a student’s writing and spelling abilities. They may struggle to recognise and decode words, leading to frustration and a loss of interest in reading. Bruern has evidence-based strategies to address these challenges and promote reading confidence.

At our school, we believe in the power of personalised education plans. We work closely with each boy to create a tailored plan that addresses their specific needs, strengths, and challenges related to dyslexia.
