We encourage all pupils to engage with music at Bruern Abbey. Consequently, there is a positive atmosphere surrounding music and it is incredibly popular, with 2/3 of the school learning a musical instrument. We help to facilitate the boys’ musical appreciation and development by adapting our approach to suit the needs of individuals. We also help to develop their confidence and performance ability by encouraging pupils to regularly take part in musical activities and ensembles. These include: weekly recitals, brass ensemble, woodwind ensembles, choir, rock band and the house music competition.
The school has 3 choirs: junior, senior and chamber. The junior choir supports the youngest singers in the school and helps to develop their vocal ability while giving them performance opportunities, such as the junior carol service. These boys will move naturally into the senior choir when they’re old enough and sing in our weekly chapel services. The chamber choir is a small group of singers who take part in our weekly anthem and sing in the senior carol service and leavers’ service. We also go on choir tours (most recently to Chinon in France) and sing at external events in the Oxfordshire area.
While we encourage all choristers to read music, it is not necessary to take part in our choirs. This ensures that we allow all boys to actively engage with singing without necessarily being limited by their musical background.
