Barn Owls Trip to the Living Rainforest

On Thursday the Barn Owls descended on the Living Rainforest in Newbury. We had been primed by Miss Burchell on where and how rainforests formed, and who and what inhabited them. We have also been studying Henri Rousseau’s jungle paintings in Art and realised that this artificial jungle was probably closer to a real one than poor old Rousseau ever got to see. As we got out of the bus we were hit by a hail storm so the sauna-like temperature was very welcome as we entered the huge, steamy greenhouses.

We had an edible rainforest tour from our very knowledgeable guide and discovered that the really poisonous blue frogs were no longer poisonous as they cannot have a constant supply of poisonous ants to eat. This massive disappointment was quickly dispersed as we discovered toucans, armadillos, marmosets, snakes and gorgeous butterflies, to name but a few. A play in the sunshine and a packed lunch eaten sur l’herbe for the first time this year, to say nothing of the goody bags provided by the Living Rainforest, made the trip a great success that has increased our jungle knowledge hugely.
