In and Out of Doors

Full use is made of the local countryside for outdoor pursuits, including cross country, riding, shooting, fishing, walking and rural studies. Physical exercise is provided daily. Organised games involve matches with neighbouring preparatory schools in rugby, soccer and cricket. There is a fine heated swimming pool, and tennis is played on local hard courts as well as on the School's grass court. Golf is available on the nearby 18-hole course.

Bruern is a musical school, with pupils given every chance to become aware of good music. The School hosts a regular concert series, featuring professional musicians and ensembles more often heard in a concert hall than in a preparatory school.

There is a specialist art room, while the School's drama programme is designed to enable the introvert and extrovert alike to rise out of themselves.

Parent Contact

The School sees education as a partnership with parents. Regular meetings for parents to meet staff are arranged. Full reports are issued each term. Parents are welcomed at the School whenever they wish to visit.

The Headmaster and School Psychologist regard advice on future secondary school placement as a fundamental role. They have close links with a wide range of public schools, some of which have developed a broad spectrum of special needs provision, and are therefore in a position to ensure that parents are given as much advice and assistance as possible in selecting the most suitable next school. Although Bruern Abbey's aim is to ensure that its pupils can cope in a competitive mainstream senior school environment, it of course cannot absolutely guarantee that every parental expectation can or indeed ought to be realised. While parental wishes in the area of future schooling are always respected, the School therefore reserves the right to provide its own expertly informed judgements as to those next schools most likely to ensure the long-term success and happiness of the child.

Bruern Abbey is administered by an educational partnership, under the direction of its Council, while the Headmaster is responsible for the day-to-day running of the School.

The health and welfare of pupils is in the charge of a resident matron. The School doctor lives locally and attends regularly.
