Activities - In and Out of Doors
Full use is made of the school's 20 acres of grounds, as well as local countryside for outdoor pursuits, including cross country, riding, shooting, fishing, walking and rural studies. Physical exercise is provided daily.
Organised games involve matches with neighbouring preparatory schools in rugby, soccer and cricket. There is a exceptionally fine indoor swimming pool, as well as two hard tennis courts. Golf is available on the nearby 18-hole course.
In addition to team games, individual and small group tuition is available, at a nominal charge, in a number of sports, including tennis, golf, riding, clay pigeon shooting and judo.
Bruern is a musical school, with pupils given every chance to become aware of good music. Many of the pupils have instrumental lessons and there is a fine choir which sings at the School's weekly chapel service.
The School sees education as a partnership with parents. Regular meetings for parents to meet staff are arranged. Full reports are issued at the end of both the Michaelmas and Summer terms. Parents are welcomed at the School whenever they wish to visit.
The Headmaster regards advice on future secondary school placement as a fundamental role. He has close links with a wide range of public schools, some of which have developed a broad spectrum of special needs provision, and is therefore in a position to ensure that parents are given as much advice and assistance as possible in selecting the most suitable next school. Although Bruern Abbey's aim is to ensure that its pupils can cope in a competitive mainstream senior school environment, it of course cannot absolutely guarantee that every parental expectation can or indeed ought to be realised. While parental wishes in the area of future schooling are always respected, the School therefore reserves the right to provide its own expertly informed judgements as to those next schools most likely to ensure the long-term success and happiness of the child.
The health and welfare of pupils is in the charge of a resident matron. The School doctor lives locally and attends regularly.
Bruern Abbey is administered by an educational partnership, while the Headmaster is responsible for
the day to day running of the School.
