Bruern Abbey School

Dear Parents,

I very much hope that this website will provide a taste of life at Bruern.

The School’s raison d’être is to prepare boys, who have dyslexia or some other form of learning difficulty, or who, for whatever reasons, may not be flourishing at their present schools, for Common Entrance to the major British Public Schools.

Our shared purpose is to provide broad and high quality education in safe and pleasant surroundings and to ensure that the work of our pupils is recognised and celebrated. We aim to enhance boy’s self-esteem in the firm belief that confidence is the key to academic success.

So why Bruern Abbey? The differences between Bruern and most other preparatory schools are essentially four-fold.

  • All boys are permitted, and indeed positively encouraged to use a laptop, and for those who have difficulty in expressing themselves as swiftly or as coherently on paper as they do in speech, this is an absolute Godsend.
  • There is a clear focus on literacy and numerical work, with ten periods of English and Mathematics each a week
  • Boys are taught in very small groups of rarely more than seven or eight boys
  • Boys are rarely taken out for remedial support, as they are surrounded by peers with similar needs therefore they feel included

As a predominantly weekly boarding School I do believe that our boarding accommodation and the care shown by staff is of the highest standard. We are steadfast in the teaching of those traditional values, dear to us all, and we place an emphasis on good manners and self-discipline, and encourage boys to share their aspirations and their anxieties.

Is Bruern Abbey the ideal school for your son? Please come, have a look and judge for yourselves.”
